BOC Domains of Athletic Training: Domain II - Assessment, Evaluation and Diagnosis Domain III - Critical Incident Management Presentation Description: This presentation, titled "Hand It Over: Giving Report To EMS In A Clear, Concise Manner," focuses on the crucial skill of effectively communicating patient information to EMS personnel during emergencies. It covers the identification of pertinent information to share with emergency dispatch, the importance of tracking vital sign trends, and how to deliver a clear and concise verbal report to EMS upon their arrival. The session aims to enhance the competency of athletic trainers in emergency communication, ensuring better patient outcomes. Learning Objectives: Be able to identify pertinent information about the situation to share with emergency dispatch. Recognize when and how to track vital sign trends.  Be able to give a concise, detailed verbal report upon EMS arrival. Clinical Practice Gap Statement: Effective communication with EMS is vital for optimal patient care, yet many athletic trainers lack formal training in this area. Common gaps include identifying critical information to relay, understanding how to track and interpret vital sign trends, and delivering comprehensive yet concise reports. These gaps can lead to miscommunication, delayed treatments, and suboptimal patient outcomes. Addressing these deficiencies is essential to ensure athletic trainers can efficiently transfer patient care to EMS, enhancing overall emergency response effectiveness. Clinical Bottom Line Statement: Improving the ability to give clear and concise reports to EMS is crucial for athletic trainers. This skill ensures that EMS teams are well-informed and prepared to provide the best possible care upon arrival. By identifying key information, tracking vital sign trends, and delivering detailed reports, athletic trainers can significantly enhance the emergency care process. This presentation provides practical strategies and guidelines to bridge the communication gap between athletic trainers and EMS, ultimately improving patient outcomes in emergency situations.

About the Presenters
Caitlin Place came to know athletic training as so many others do, through an injury of her own during high school sports. With a new passion for the field, she attended the University of Northern Iowa. She completed an athletic training internship at Mayo Clinic, passed her BOC, and graduated from UNI in 2016 with her bachelor’s degree in athletic training. Caitlin is currently in her eighth year as an athletic trainer, and has worked in a variety of settings, including an orthopedic clinic, out-patient physical therapy, and high school and junior college outreach with a multitude of sports. Currently, she is the athletic trainer for Jackson County Central in Jackson, Minnesota, the very high school where she was first introduced to sports medicine. In addition to athletic training, Caitlin’s other passion is emergency medicine. She has been an EMT for two years, and was a first responder for a year before that. She has been able to use her dual credentials to update local EMS protocols on cold water immersion for heat stroke, and train both the ambulance service and hospital emergency department on football equipment removal. She also uses her online presence to educate on the role and importance of athletic trainers, and as a result, has appeared on two athletic training podcasts. She also hopes to obtain paramedic knowledge and credentials someday. When not indulging in her work passions, Caitlin loves reading, playing board games, helping with the local church youth group, and spending time with her husband Riley, their four-year-old daughter, three-month-old son, and three large dogs.
