BOC Domains of Athletic Training:

  • Domain II - Assessment, Evaluation and Diagnosis
  • Domain III - Critical Incident Management
  • Domain IV - Therapeutic Intervention

Course Description:

This webinar focuses on the critical management of drowning incidents in aquatic environments, tailored for BOC Athletic Trainers. Through an interactive and engaging case study of a swimmer who has drowned, participants will navigate through the process of scene size-up, patient assessment, and the necessary interventions to stabilize the patient. Emphasizing the "find it and fix it" approach, this session provides hands-on learning experiences to address and manage life-threatening emergencies effectively.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Assess and manage the scene of a drowning incident to ensure the safety of the rescuer and the patient, including the identification of environmental hazards and the use of personal protective equipment.
  2. Conduct a thorough primary assessment for a drowning victim, focusing on circulation, airway, and breathing (CAB), and recognizing the unique aspects of aquatic emergency care.
  3. Implement appropriate interventions for a drowning victim, including airway management and rescue breathing techniques, and prepare for potential complications such as vomiting.

Clinical Practice Gap Statement:

There is a pressing need for athletic trainers to possess specialized knowledge and skills in managing drowning incidents, which present unique challenges compared to other emergency situations. This session aims to fill the gap by enhancing participants' abilities to effectively assess and intervene in drowning emergencies, with a specific focus on aquatic settings.

Clinical Bottom Line Statement:

Successful management of drowning incidents requires rapid and accurate assessment, awareness of the specific challenges posed by the aquatic environment, and the ability to perform targeted interventions. By mastering these skills, athletic trainers can significantly improve the outcomes for drowning victims.
